Traditional Funeral Rites

The passing of a loved one, the Death and ceremonies involving funerals are a huge part of Korean culture.

In many ways, the process involving a person's death is very much part of Korean life itself.

During my early years in Korea in 1960-70's, I was always fascinated with the funeral procession of Sangyeo(상여), a colorful Korean hearse decorated with paper flowers, symbolizing the path into the next world littered with flowers.

The funeral processions often were accompanied with banners to honor the achievements of the deceased and singing chants to guide the spirit into the next world called Jeoseung(저승.)

The pallbearers called Sangyeogun(상여꾼) stopped procession of the bier topped with paper-flower decorated Sangyeo time to time, and the Sangyeo hearse won't move an inch, unless some travel money called Nojatdon(노잣돈) was inserted into the two-strand rice straw rope twirl. The Nojatdon was to be used to bribe guards at the gates of the next world.

As part of the funeral service for Mrs. Park Kiok, the Founding Director of Shuim Museum in Seoul, Jindo SsitgimGoot (씻김굿), the Intangible Cultural Heritage number 72 of Korea, was performed to honor Mrs. Park. The SsigimGoot is to cleanse the spirit of a deceased person for the journey into the next world.

The Shuim Museum was founded by Mrs. Park in 2007, following the loss of her husband in 2005, to preserve the traditional funeral rites in this era of fast changing funeral rites in Korea. The museum has an extensive collection of funeral related artifacts on display.

"Mrs. Park had been making substantial savings in the Bank of Paradise" announced Mr. Kim Jongkyu, the chairman of the National Trust of Korea and the funeral coordinator, "so we won't be accepting any Nojatdon during the Ssitgimgoot ceremony." said Mr. Kim.

"This was the first known Jindo Ssitgimgoot (씻김굿) performance at an actual funeral in Seoul" said Mr. Kim.

관혼상제(冠婚喪祭) 는 관례, 혼례, 상례, 제례를 일컫는 말로, 우리 문화의 소중한 전통의례입니다,

우리 전통장례에서는 사람이 죽으면 초상(初喪) 기간에서 장사(葬事)의 마지막날을 장식하는 꽃상여가 나가는 날까지, 상여가 나가는것을 보면서 돌아가신 망자에게 공동체가 작별을 고하는 고유한 우리의 장례문화가 있습니다.

언제부턴가 우리사회에서도 서양 장례 문화가 들어오면서, 간편한 장의차 (葬儀車)가 상여행렬을 대체하게되면서, 누가 타계(他界) 했는줄도 모르고, 그저 익명으로 살다가는 사람들이 많아진 사회가 되었습니다.

어제 우리 장례문화를 연구하고 전시해온 쉼박물관에서, 7월18일 88세로 타계한 쉼박물관창시자 박기옥 쉼박물관장님이 평소 고인이 원하시던대로 마지막 보내드리는 날에, 문화유산국민신탁 김종규이사장님이 장례위원장으로 기획한 "국가무형문화재 진도씻김굿"을 곁들인 발인(發靷)식이 있었습니다.

문화유산국민신탁 김종규이사장님에 의하면 "서울에서 처음있는 진도씻김굿 발인식이다" 라고 하셨습니다.

미국에서는 공동체에서 타계소식을 신문에 조문기사나 조문광고로 꼼꼼하게 기록되어서, 학자들을 포함해서 누구나 동네도서관에가면 그동네 누가 언제 살다가 갔다는 기록을 찾을수가 있습니다. 한국사회에서 완성도가 더 높은 전통의 계승과 기록이 필요하다 생각해봅니다.
