Modern Korean Wedding celebration

I was honored to witness a modern wedding ceremony of my friend Kim Kun-soo's son Kim Tae-rim to Ms. Lee Han-na at the Kintex Shinsegae Gramercy in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province, Korea on December 17, 2022.

The last time when I saw Tae-rim, he was in elementary school.

The newly wed had no Marriage Officiant at their wedding celebration. Korean marriage certificate is complete when two parties submit a report of marriage just with two witnesses signing the form.

There were no wedding gifts. Most if not all guests gave a gift money in an envelope which has 축화혼 which means " Congratulate Splendid Wedding!"

Wedding guests are treated to a wonderful multi-course banquet meal starting out with Peking Duck followed with Australian Beef Steak served with Korean Rice complete with Traditional Korean noodles symbolizing longevity of the marriage and life.

끊임없이 변하고 있는 한국인의 결혼풍습:

36년전부터 알고 지낸 김건수선배의 아드님 김태림군의 결혼을 축하해주고 왔습니다.
30여년전에 마지막 봤던 태림이의 결혼에서 김선배의 밝고 행복한 모습을 사진으로 기록할수 있어 기뻤습니다.

미국과는 다르게 선물대신 결혼축의금 (結婚祝儀金) 을 "찬란한 혼인을 축하합니다" 라는 뜻의 祝華婚 (축화혼) 이라고 쓴 봉투에 담아서 주는 풍습은 하객들을 대접하는 비용에 보탬이 되는 한국적인 전통으로 자리잡았습니다.

맛있는 호주산 스테이크와 북경오리훈제요리, 전통 잔치국수 대접받은 하객들은 3시간 주차시간을 채우며 두 집안의 경사를 같이 나누었습니다.
