I was in North Korea in May, 1997. Here is a Food shortagestory from my North Korea trip that ran in the
Los Angeles Times
on Sunday, June 8, 1997.

Unpa County, North Korea--The late North Korean President Kim Il Sung'sportrait overlooks Unpa Bridge, located two hours south of Pyongyang bycar, which was swept away during July 20, 1996 flood that caused propertydamages to 46,000 people in Unpa county. The bridge is being rebuilt withold concrete pieces retrieved from the river. Unpa residents get food rationof 400 grams of corn meal per person per week (in good times, they usedto receive 700 grams per day.) People eat porridge made with wild plantsand corn meal. The slogan under Kim's portrait says "Respectful fatherComrade Kim Il Sung will be in the hearts of the people forever.

Unpa County, North Korea--A Local farmer pulls a carriage across what
used to be part of 4,000 acres of rice patties covered with rocks and gravel
from 1995 flood that brought a part of local mountain over the farm landin Unpa county located two hours south of Pyongyang by car. Only about
a third of damaged farm land has been restored. Of 120,000 people in Unpa
County, 72,000 people in 1995 and 46,000 people in 1996 flood suffered loss.
