Jindo Gae means "Dog of Jindo Island." Jindo Island is
located in the southwest of the Korean peninsula. This
region of Korea is known historically as the place to
which Korean Kings exiled intellectuals who opposed
them. Being sent into exile was worst thing next to
being sentenced to death during the periods of Korean
dynastic rule which ended in the early 1900's.
Although the Korean peninsula is mostly mountains, about
73% in the south and 84% in the north, the Ho-nam region
in the southwest has large plains that have always been
considered the best farm lands in Korea.
The Korean peninsula with mountains separating different
regions from one another, developed highly distinct
dialects, food, and music in each region. According to a
recent study, indigenous people in each region still
have distinctively different facial features. From this
vastly different terrain, different looking dogs also
developed.
The southwest region of Korea is known for its richness
in arts, literature and music. This culturally rich
region is also the home of the Jindo dog, Korea's
Natural Monument #53.

Circled area is Jindo Island.
