Jindo dog moves effortlessly over all kinds of terrain.
Facts about "JINDO GAE (DOG)"
ORIGIN: For centuries, the Jindo dog, named after Jindo Island in Southwest
Korea, was only available on the island. Under Korean national law, the Jindo
dog is protected as the 53rd Natural Monument. Exporting Jindos out of
Korea is prohibited, however Korean-Americans have been bringing Jindos to
America since the mid-1980's.
DESCRIPTION: The Jindo is a medium-sized dog and is robust, pleasant and agile in
movement. It has the lean body of a marathoner, capable of running extremely
long distances and it moves with an effortless gait. *Height: Standard height (height at the withers) for dogs: 45-55cm (18-22 inches; for bitches: 43-52cm (17-21inches). *Weight: For dogs: 15-20 kg (33-44
lbs); for bitches: 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs). *Ears: Erect, pointed and very mobile. *Tail: There are two types: ring tail, rolled on its back; erect tail,
straight up. *Eyes: Gingko nut-shaped yellowish brown eyes with clear pupils.
Jindos with reddish eyes are considered better hunters. *Expression: The Jindo has a friendly, courteous and energetic expression. *Hair: Coat is of medium length, coarse with a thick undercoat. *Color: Korean law currently only recognizes white Jindos and red (tan)Jindos, thus they are the most popular colors. Some Jindo Island
residents have valued black, black/tan and red/white Jindos for being good
hunters over the years.
PERSONALITY: Extremely loyal and affectionate toward its master, a clean animal
both in its body as well as its habits, very independent, highly
intelligent, proud and trainable only by the master. It is an aggressive fighter
among dogs. It has an innate sense of direction and is capable of returning
home from several hundred miles away.
USES: The Jindo specializes in hunting deer, wild boar, rabbit, raccoon, and
badger, which it can scent several days after they pass. It loves hunting and
vast open spaces. When several Jindos are hunting together for big game
such as deer, after capturing the game, one of the Jindos returns to the
master to bring him to the location while the other Jindos sit and wait by
the game. The South Korean military uses Jindos on military bases where
they learn to recognize thousands of personnel at the base and to detect
outsiders. Jindos are said to recognize and remember over 30,000 different scents.
